First, what is FUNCTION KEYS:  A function key is one of the computer special keyboard keys which is been used mostly to perform some certain actions on the computer system, unlike other keyboard keys. 

In most cases the function keys have some default actions, can perform on system power-on or booting stage. 

The function keys include (F1 – F12) keys found mostly on the first row of any computer keyboard. 

Normally a standard keyboard with the function keys has only the F-number print on them while some may have the abbreviations of some default actions printed on or beside them.

The CONTROL KEY: Here, in computing, a control key is one of the special keyboard keys bearing this symbol (Ctrl). 

The control key is normally located on or near the bottom left side of most standard keyboards with many having an additional one at the bottom right of the keyboards. 

The control key doesn’t really perform any function when been pressed alone by itself, same with the Shift Key rather it performs some vital operations when been pressed down with another key.
NOTE: Usage of the Function keys normally works on Desktop Computers Keyboard as per such some Laptops don’t flow along with these keys.

However, the function keys when been pressed down performs the operation as the abbreviations or default actions printed on or beside them. 

Meanwhile, the Control Keys works perfectly in all cases.


THE FUNCTION KEYS AND ITS MAJOR USES

  • F1 – For Help
The F1 key is used for HELP. This helps when a computer user wants help on a particular program, then you should click on the F1 key for help and it opens up the help window for you. 

However, the F1 Key is also used to enter the BIOS mode. The other use of the F1 key is achieved when pressed down the window key and the F1 key. 

Example; Win + F1, open up the Help Windows in Microsoft.

  • F2 – To Move
The F2 Key works in all windows version and is used for moving files when working on some system programs. 

It is also used in renaming a file or folder (Shortcut key to rename a file/folder). 

The other uses of F2 keys are achieved when pressing the Alt+Ctrl+F2, opens a document as a Microsoft Word, pressing the Ctrl+F2, opens a preview window in Microsoft Word.

  • F3 – To Insert Auto Text
The F3 Key is used to insert auto text on some system programs. In windows or MS-DOS charge line, the F3 key is used to rehash the last summons. 

The other uses of the F3 key are achieved when pressed down the Win+F3, it opens the Advanced Search Window in Microsoft Outlook. 

Also pressing Shift+F3 changes the selected text in Microsoft word to upper case or lower case and capital letters of mostly the first letter of each word.

  • F4 – Repeat
The F4 Key is used to repeat some actions in system program files. F4 key also opens the location bar in windows explorer and internet explorer when been pressed down. 

Other uses of the F4 key is achieved when pressing Ctrl+F4, it closes the present environment on windows, pressing down Alt+F4, closes the system windows.

  •     F5 – Go To
The F5 key performs the Go to action on some system programs, it also helps in Refreshing a Page or Desktop Environment. 

The F5 key opens up the running of a slide to demonstrate in PowerPoint.

  •     F6 – Less Pen
The F6 key performs the operation of Less Pen action in some system Programs. Also, The F6 key moves the cursor in the location bar. 

Pressing down the Ctrl+Shift+F6 key opens a Document in Microsoft Word.

  •     F7 – Spelling and Grammar
The F7 key is mostly used to check the spelling and grammar in any Document Programs of Microsoft like Word, Outlook and a few others.
  •     F8 – Extend Selection
The F8 serves as the extent selection action in some system application programs. It is also used to make your computer to enter safe mode while the computer is about to boot.
  •     F9 – Update Selection
The F9 key performs the action as Update selection in some system programs. In most cases, the F9 Key doesn’t have any function to do in Windows. 

The F9 key can only be used in few programs like AutoCAD.

  •     F10 – Activate The Menu Bar
The F10 key is used to activate certain Menu bar of system programs, like in activating menu bar of the Open Organizer Window. 

Pressing down Shift+F10 key works same as the right click of a mouse. Also pressing down the F10 key during system booting displays the BIOS information.

  •     F11 – Go to the Next Field
The F11 key is used to enter next field program environment in some cases and also helps you to enter Full-Screen Mode in some few system applications and programs.
  •     F12 – To Save.
The F12 key is used to save a file or document, pressing the F12 Key opens the “Save As” environment in Microsoft Word. 

Also pressing down Shift+F12 key saves a document in Microsoft Word automatically. 

The other use of the F12 key helps in opening the inspect element box in Browsers, by pressing down Ctrl+Shift+F12 key, prints a document in Microsoft Word.
